The All-In-One Red Gypsum Ant Nest: A Complete Setup for Larger Ant Species

Most ant nests work well for compact species like Lasius or Tetramorium, but larger species need more. Workers that are physically bigger need chambers with more vertical clearance, and colonies with large workers tend to find small-chamber nests cramped well before they reach their population peak. The All-In-One Red Gypsum Ant Nest was designed with exactly that problem in mind.

What makes it different from standard gypsum nests

The key difference is chamber depth. This nest features 0.8 in (20 mm) deep chambers, which is noticeably more than you get in most standard setups. That extra height gives larger workers the space they need to move through the nest comfortably, and it makes the chambers more usable for brood care in species where the queen and major workers are both substantially sized.

The nesting area measures approximately 3.9 x 2 in (10 x 5 cm), which is enough for a developing colony without being so large that a young group feels exposed. The red gypsum material holds moisture well, and hydration is handled through a dedicated side opening using a syringe and needle. You hydrate directly into the gypsum without opening or disturbing the colony at all. Note that a syringe and needle are not included.

Integrated outworld with a convenient feeding port

Attached directly to the nest is a 2 x 3.9 x 3.9 in outworld, giving the colony a dedicated foraging space from day one. Feeding goes through a circular port at the top of the outworld, so you do not have to lift the full lid every time you add food. For daily feeding this saves time and keeps disturbance to a minimum.

Modular and expandable

The nest and outworld are held together using magnets and removable acrylic side bars secured with screws. A screwdriver is included. This means you can separate the components when your colony needs more space, reconfigure the layout, or add further sections to the setup over time. It is a practical design for keepers who plan ahead rather than rehoming colonies when they outgrow their first nest.

The setup requires some assembly before use. You will need to remove all protective film from the acrylic parts, place the included tubing between the nest and outworld to create the passage, position the two sections together, and then screw the acrylic side bars into place. It takes a few minutes and a screwdriver, which comes in the box.

A note on sourcing

This nest was not designed or manufactured by Esthetic Ants. It is sourced from one of our Asian manufacturing partners and was added to our range because we think it is a practical, affordable option for keepers who want a ready-made setup for larger species. It has been inspected and tested by us before going on sale.

Who it is best for

If you keep or plan to keep larger ant species such as Camponotus, Pogonomyrmex, or Pheidole with their larger major workers, this nest is worth a look. The deep chambers, side hydration, and integrated outworld make it a genuinely complete starting point that will serve a colony through its early and middle growth stages without requiring an immediate upgrade.

The All-In-One Red Gypsum Ant Nest is available now for $59.95.
