More than 100 leafcutter colonies have been successfully established in this system, and we continue to use and improve it ourselves. After multiple design iterations, we can confidently say that this is one of the most effective leafcutter founding setups available.

Dedicated Fungus Chamber

At the heart of the setup is the dedicated fungus pod, measuring approximately 5.5 x 5.5 x 4.7 inches. This chamber is designed specifically to house the fungus garden, which is the most important part of any leafcutter colony.

The entire lid can be removed using the thumb screws, making it easy to introduce a new colony, inspect the fungus, or perform maintenance. Thanks to our reinforced heat-set inserts, the screws can be removed and reinstalled countless times without damaging the plastic.

The fungus chamber rests on a finely slotted acrylic mesh. The slots are small enough to support the fungus garden while allowing moisture to pass through efficiently. Beneath the mesh is a large water reservoir that helps maintain the high humidity levels leafcutters require. For best results, we recommend adding cotton, sand, plaster, or another moisture-retaining material to the reservoir.

Integrated Foraging Area

The fungus pod connects directly to a spacious outworld where workers can forage, process leaves, and dispose of waste.

Many leafcutter setups use a separate waste chamber, but we have found this to be unnecessary when the outworld is cleaned regularly. This keeps the setup compact, simple, and easy to maintain.

The outworld lid can be removed completely for easy feeding and cleaning. An anti-escape barrier can also be applied to the walls, making routine maintenance straightforward and stress-free.

Advanced Ventilation System

One of the unique features of this setup is the dedicated ventilation shaft integrated into the outworld.

This additional airflow helps keep the outworld dry and well ventilated, discouraging the ants from establishing fungus gardens outside the fungus chamber. By encouraging the colony to maintain the fungus where it belongs, the setup remains cleaner and easier to manage.

Expandable Design

As your colony grows, the setup can grow with it. The system is fully compatible with our 15 mm tubing, allowing additional fungus chambers, outworlds, or other modules to be connected in the future.
